Sunlight Sports is Cody, Wyoming's premier specialty outdoor retailer, located 52 miles from Yellowstone National Park's East Entrance. Since 1971, we've been the trusted outfitter for adventures in the Greater Yellowstone region, Absaroka Mountains, Shoshone National Forest, and Beartooth Highway corridor.

What We Offer

Our specialty outdoor shop carries comprehensive gear and expertise for:

  • Backcountry skiing and nordic skiing – equipment, rentals, and local route knowledge

  • Alpine climbing and ice climbing – technical gear and beta for regional routes

  • Backpacking and camping – four-season equipment for Wyoming backcountry

  • Trail running and hiking – footwear, packs, and trail condition updates

  • Winter sports rentals – skis, snowboards, and snowshoes

Our staff doesn't just sell gear - we live these adventures. We've hiked the trails, skied the slopes, and camped under the same stars. That experience goes into every recommendation we make and every trip plan we help you build.

More Than Just a Store

We believe the outdoors is for everyone, and we're committed to making it accessible to the next generation. Through our 2% of sales giving program, we donate over $35,000 annually to local nonprofits focused on getting kids outdoors, helping them build a lifelong love for adventure and nature.

Community Events & Programs

Regular community events hosted at Sunlight Sports:

  • Weekly Pint Nights featuring local nonprofits and outdoor organizations

  • Guided group hikes exploring Cody-area trails and wild spaces

  • Annual nonprofit gathering (Community Night) connecting community organizations

  • Youth outdoor education programs in partnership with local schools and groups

  • Trail running and hiking meetups throughout the season

Whether it's a casual gathering or hands-on skills training, our goal is simple: make Cody a better place to live and play.

Gateway to World-Class Adventure

Cody, Wyoming, is more than a gateway to Yellowstone National Park -it's a haven for outdoor lovers, surrounded by some of the most spectacular recreation opportunities in the country.

To the west, the Absaroka Mountains rise with jagged peaks and endless trails. These high alpine routes offer breathtaking views and chances to spot wildlife like elk, bighorn sheep, and even grizzly bears. The nearby Shoshone National Forest, America's first national forest, is a sprawling playground for hikers, campers, and anglers seeking untouched wilderness.

To the north, the Beartooth Mountains deliver stunning terrain for adventurous souls. The Beartooth Highway, often called one of America's most beautiful drives, connects you to high-altitude hikes, pristine lakes, and wildflower-covered meadows that stretch as far as the eye can see.

In winter, Cody transforms into a snow lover's paradise. Nordic skiers and snowshoers flock to nearby trails, while the snow-covered peaks offer opportunities for backcountry adventures. Out on the South Fork, frozen waterfalls provide a challenge for ice climbers.

Closer to home, the Shoshone National Forest, the vast BLM lands, and the Heart Mountain area provide family-friendly trails and open spaces perfect for a day hike or a casual stroll. Cody's backyard is more than just a landscape - it's a way of life.

From the grandeur of Yellowstone to the quiet serenity of hidden trails, the recreation area around Cody is as diverse as the adventurers who explore it. Whether you're here for a weekend or a lifetime, you'll find that every path leads to something unforgettable.

Family-Owned Since 1971

Sunlight Sports is one of the oldest family-owned specialty outdoor retailers in the nation and has earned its reputation as the premier place to plan your trip into the Wyoming backcountry. The shop was founded in January 1971 by Bob Newsome. Over the next forty years, Bob and his wife Sandy built one of the premier outfitters in the Rocky Mountains. They sold the store to Sandy's sister Melissa in 2010, keeping it in the family and maintaining our commitment to expert service and community support.

Your support of our locally-owned, independent outdoor shop keeps between 15 and 20 people employed year-round and helps us make sure that deserving nonprofits in our county get the support they deserve.

Your support of our locally-owned, independent outdoor shop keeps between 15 and 20 people employed year-round, and helps us make sure that deserving non-profits in our county get the support they deserve.
