Who We Are
At Sunlight Sports, adventure starts at our doorstep. Since 1971, we have been Cody’s trusted source for outdoor gear, local expertise, and inspiration for exploring the incredible landscapes of the Greater Yellowstone region.
We are more than just a store. From the pine-and-vanilla scent that greets you when you walk in to the railings crafted from Black Diamond materials and the vintage Tucker Sno-Cat upstairs, every detail of our space is designed to feel like home for outdoor enthusiasts.
We believe the outdoors is for everyone, and we are committed to making it accessible to the next generation. That is why we proudly support local nonprofits focused on getting kids outdoors, helping them build a lifelong love for adventure and nature. Whether it is through pint nights, guided hikes, or our annual nonprofit gathering, our goal is simple: to make Cody a better place to live and play.
Our team does not just sell gear. We live the adventures we help others experience. We have hiked the trails, skied the slopes, and camped under the same stars. We have poured that passion and knowledge into every part of what we do, so you can feel confident and inspired as you gear up for your next journey.
Stop by, say hello, and let us get you ready for the adventure of a lifetime. At Sunlight Sports, the outdoors is not just what we do, it is who we are.
Proud Part of Downtown Cody, WY
Cody, Wyoming, is more than a gateway to Yellowstone National Park—it is a haven for outdoor lovers, surrounded by some of the most spectacular recreation opportunities in the country. Whether you are looking for rugged backcountry trails, world-class climbing routes, or peaceful moments by a mountain stream, you will find it here.
To the west, the Absaroka Mountains rise with jagged peaks and endless trails. These high alpine routes offer breathtaking views and chances to spot wildlife like elk, bighorn sheep, and even grizzly bears. The nearby Shoshone National Forest, America’s first national forest, is a sprawling playground for hikers, campers, and anglers seeking untouched wilderness.
To the north, the Beartooth Mountains deliver stunning terrain for adventurous souls. The Beartooth Highway, often called one of America’s most beautiful drives, connects you to high-altitude hikes, pristine lakes, and wildflower-covered meadows that stretch as far as the eye can see.
In winter, Cody transforms into a snow lover’s paradise. Nordic skiers and snowshoers flock to nearby trails, while the snow-covered peaks offer opportunities for backcountry adventures. Just outside of town, frozen waterfalls provide a challenge for ice climbers.
Closer to home, the South Fork Valley and the Heart Mountain area provide family-friendly trails and open spaces perfect for a day hike or a casual stroll. Cody’s backyard is more than just a landscape—it is a way of life.
From the grandeur of Yellowstone to the quiet serenity of hidden trails, the recreation area around Cody is as diverse as the adventurers who explore it. Whether you are here for a weekend or a lifetime, you will find that every path leads to something unforgettable.

Locally Owned
Sunlight Sports is one of the oldest, family-owned, specialty outdoor retailers in the nation and has the reputation as the premier place to plan your trip into the Wyoming backcountry. The shop was founded in January 1971 by Bob Newsome. Over the next forty years, Bob and his wife Sandy built one of the premier outfitters in the Rocky Mountains. They sold the store to Sandy’s sister Melissa in 2010.
2% of Sales Donated to Non-Profits
Your support of our locally-owned, independent outdoor shop keeps between 15 and 20 people employed year-round, and helps us make sure that deserving non-profits in our county get the support they deserve. Every year, we donate at least 2% of our sales to local groups that work to get youth involved in the outdoors. Last year this was over $35,000.
