Bald Ridge - A Climb worth the time
The climb up 6,600 foot Bald Ridge is a calf-burner, but the high point has broad, flat rocks arranged like stadium seating. Have lunch on the top with views all the way to the Bighorn Mountains before heading back to the trailhead.
Intro
Bald Ridge is a 6,600-foot rise about 25 miles northwest of Cody. Visible from the Belfry Highway, it is part of the eastern flank of the Beartooth Mountains. From Hogan Lake, the trail starts with a flat mile across cattle grazing land and then drops down to Newmeyer Creek at mile 1.2. It’s possible to cross the creek without getting wet, but this is the only water on the hike, so dogs should be sure to get a drink here. The next section gradually climbs through grassy foothills on an established trail. At mile 2.1, a BLM sign directs hikers to turn either left or right to continue on the Bald Ridge Trail. This is the start of the 3.25 mile loop portion of the trail, and also the beginning of the ascent. Turn right at the junction and follow the trail as it grades up and around the base of Bald Ridge. The trail soon disappears, but rock cairns mark the way to where a clear trail resumes on the steep incline before the top. Once at the top of the drainage, leave the trail for a few minutes to climb the rocky ledge above. This is the high point and an excellent spot to sit down and enjoy the views. Afterward, finish the loop by dropping down into the next drainage. An established trail follows the creekbed and emerges back at the left-right BLM sign below.
What Makes It Great
Hogan and Luce reservoirs are a lovely spot to start and end a hike. The lakes are off the beaten path, even for locals, and are set in a hidden valley in the Beartooth foothills. Bring a swimsuit for a quick cool-off in Hogan Lake at the end of the hike. In early summer, this area is prime habitat for elk and their newborn calves. Bears, pronghorn, and mule deer may also be seen along the way.
Who is Going to Love It
Steep and alluring, this is a great trail for strong hikers looking for a challenging climb. Bald Ridge is popular with hikers, trail runners, and equestrians. Much of this route is off-trail, so it’s best for people who enjoy searching for the next rock cairn.
Directions, Parking & Regulations
From Cody, take WY-120 north toward Belfry for 18 miles. Turn left on County Road 7RP (just after the turn for the Chief Joseph Highway). 7RP is a well-maintained dirt road suitable for all passenger vehicles. After five miles, turn left at the large brown BLM sign for the Hogan and Luce Reservoir. Once at the reservoir, follow the right-most option and park in the picnic area at the north end of Hogan Reservoir. The trail starts behind the gate and this hike is on both BLM and Wyoming state land. There is no cell phone service at the trailhead, but there’s a good signal at the top of the ridge. Bald Ridge trail is fully exposed to the sun with minimal shade. The route can get hot, so be prepared with plenty of water.
